Building Community with Utopi and Fellow Humans

We’ve been busy the past couple of weeks hosting some events with our partners at Fellow Humans. Read about how they went!

Look, we could give you the usual shpiel about "fostering community" and "meaningful connections," but honestly? We just think making stuff with your neighbours is actually fun.

Over the past few weeks, we've been hosting Fellow Humans workshops at Downing and Luna Student residences, and they've been exactly what residents needed. Think less awkward mixer energy, more "wait, you live two doors down and also love fresh pasta?"

We've hosted two workshops so far: one for fresh pasta making (flour everywhere, actual edible results, surprisingly therapeutic) and another for crafting baubles (recycled fabric, sewing, and creativity with zero pressure for perfection). Both gave people a reason to sit around a table, figure things out together, and have actual conversations while making something with their hands.

Why does Community matter?

Here's the thing: these workshops aren't just about learning to make pasta or craft decorations. They're about doing something real and sustainable instead of just scrolling or streaming alone in your room. They're about recognising the humans around you, the ones you share walls with, and building something together.

In a world where everything feels increasingly digital and disposable, there's something genuinely grounding about creating with your hands and connecting face-to-face. Plus, sustainable activities just feel better knowing you're not contributing to more waste.

The students who showed up brought incredible energy and embraced the creative process. Their willingness to try something new, to chat with strangers who might become friends, and to show up for each other is exactly what this is all about.

And we’d like to say s big thanks to our partners in these workshops. The team at Fellow Humans did a brilliant job of hosting and creating workshops that genuinely bring people together. They've helped prove that building community doesn't have to be complicated. Luna and Downing's dedication to building student communities speaks for itself. They care about more than just accommodation, they understand that where we live shapes how we live.
